Early Life and Education
Born into a family of ten children in a small village, he grew up where farming and religious music were integral to daily life. Despite facing the challenges of limited educational resources and economic constraints, his curiosity and drive for knowledge were evident from an early age. He attended local government schools, actively participating in his father’s religious teachings, which helped shape his ethical and community-centered values.
His academic journey took him to Loyola College in Vijayawada for pre-university studies, followed by Andhra University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy. His quest for deeper knowledge led him to pursue a Master’s degree in Biochemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Technology, setting the stage for his future career achievements.
Career
His professional life began with a critical internship at Hoechst in Mumbai, where he worked across various manufacturing and laboratory roles, gaining essential industry experience. After completing his Master’s degree, he took a position at Bharat Salt and Chemicals in Orissa. In 1977, seeking greater professional growth, he emigrated to the United States, armed only with his expertise and relentless drive.
Starting from the bottom, Murty rapidly ascended the ranks in well-known pharmaceutical companies such as PurePack (now Teva) and Barr Labs. By 1978, he had risen to a production manager position at ICN Pharmaceuticals. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Able Labs in 1984, where he successfully navigated the company through various industry challenges, achieving FDA approvals for critical products like Tranxene tablets and Monistat suppositories.
Since 2003, he has been a strategic advisor to KVK Tech, leveraging his extensive experience to guide the company in its mission to develop and manufacture affordable, FDA-approved pharmaceuticals. His contributions have been vital in enhancing the company’s capacity to provide high-quality medications accessible to a broader audience.
Philanthropic Initiatives
Parallel to his career, his philanthropic activities have had a profound impact. He founded the Satyaram Health Clinic, which provides affordable healthcare to rural villages in India. Additionally, his support helped build a Hindu temple in Bridgewater, New Jersey. In 1989, he donated significantly to the University of Kentucky’s Department of Pharmacy, aiming to bolster pharmaceutical research by funding post-doctoral positions.
Alongside his late wife, Dr. Varalaxmi Vepuri, MD, he initiated several projects to improve education and childcare, firmly believing in education’s transformative power.
